Welcome to August! We're getting towards the end of the dog days of summer and that can only mean one thing...it's hot. Like insanely hot. So what better thing to do than stay inside, grab a book, read and then talk about it?! Well that's exactly what we did here with the hosts of Check Your Shelf and The Staredown.
The most important season in the south is upon us as well (that's football season for those of you who may not know that) so Jaimee & Mallory team up to bring you a review of two books that you can enjoy in between games.
The first one they discuss is Bleachers by John Grisham. It's a tale of a small town football coach, Eddie Rake, who is dying and his players come to stand vigil, or in this case sit vigil, in the bleachers of the high school stadium. They reminisce about the good times and delicately dance around those things may be better left to buried with Coach Rake.
The second book is The National Team: The Inside Story of the Women Who Changed Soccer by Caitlin Murray. It tells the story of the history of the US Women's National Team and includes anecdotes from former and current members of the teams. They provide details about their fight for pay equality and give incredible insight into life on and off the pitch. It may not be the American football but that we're all used to but this book is a great look at how societal issues affect even the world's greatest athletes.
Be sure to check out the book recommendations that are given as well as the walk out song recommendations. They're all listed for you below.
So sit back, relax, grab a book and beverage or two, and enjoy this crossover of Check Your Shelf and The Staredown.
